How did Spark start and who is behind the app?

Spark began its journey in 2010 as a small app created for a single firehouse in Arizona. Spark was created fireman David DeGraaf who had a vision to make the lives of first responders easier. The app evolved during the next decade before I, Mathew Pinelli, purchased the app in October 2024.

I was a user of spark for close to a decade when one day it was gone from the Google Play store. I stalked, I mean found, the owner of Spark and contacted him. David was the nicest person I have ever dealt with. David had move on from Spark finding new hobbies as retirement was on the horizon and I was looking for something to do in retirement myself. David was adamant about Spark being first responder owned and I, as a “tech guy” police officer for almost 20 years, it was the perfect match. We worked out a deal, we fixed the app, and now Spark is back on track.

Spark was the first shift calendar app ever created and it was downloaded thousands of times because it did exactly what was needed. Advancements in technology and different needs of the next generation of first responders have put Spark a bit behind in the race to be the best. As of March 2025, I began a major overhaul of Spark. The newer version will include many advanced features while still catering to first responders and anyone that works a shift schedule worldwide.

This is an awesome app to help with the weird schedules of firemen everywhere. I now can look up dates that my husband is available. And I can see when is the best time to call or not call my son who lives in a different state and on a different schedule. When you have more than one person in the family who is in the emergency service, this is a must have for dinosaurs like me.

Best schedule app I have found so far. Let’s you customize your schedule which I had to do. Very easy to keep track of vacation, sick leave and even exposure tracking. I’ve had this app for many years. Recently had a issue with restoring my yearly subscription after making payment. Reached out to support, got a response within an hour and was back to full access. Never had any other issues. Works great especially for a rotating chart. Being able to add device calendar is also a plus. If your in need of a calendar especially in a rotating chart with all the event types one could think of in PD, Fire, EMS, etc. this ones for you.
